HOW CAN I BECOME A NATURALIZED CITIZEN?
Filing the appropriate paperwork is the way to begin. An adult should fill out and submit an Application for Naturalization, form N-400. Minors must apply for a Certification of Citizenship, form N-600. If you have adopted children from a foreign country, you will need a Certification of Citizenship on behalf of an Adopted Child, form N-463. If you have questions about any of these forms, our firm may provide the counsel and guidance you need. Call us today and get started!
WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR THE NATURALIZATION PROCESS?
The naturalization requirements depend on your eligibility. You must take the “Eligibility Test for Citizenship” to be considered.
You should expect to meet the following requirements:
- Green card holder
- 18 years old or older
- U.S. resident for five years or three years if married with children
- Upstanding character
- Resident of current state for at least three months
- Adequate understanding of U.S. history and government
- Knowledge of English
- Have not left the U.S. for more than a year during the residency requirement.
HOW LONG DOES THE NATURALIZATION PROCESS TAKE?
Most people complete the process in six to nine months, but it varies from person to person. You may face many obstacles during the process though, which makes it crucial to have a legal advocate on your side. Your naturalization process will be unique, and an immigration lawyer can prepare a strategy for you and help you avoid any speed bumps along the way.
