THE GROUNDS FOR REVOKING UNITED STATES CITIZENSHIP
Did you know that a naturalized United States citizen can be stripped of his or her citizenship through a process called denaturalization? That’s right. Although this practice is not common, it is possible and can result in immediate deportation from the United States.
Below are some terms for denaturalization:
1. LYING ABOUT OR HIDING RELEVANT FACTS
When applying for citizenship, persons must tell the truth and disclose any valuable information that may be necessary during the application process for naturalization. If the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services discovers a person has hidden or omitted information, even after the person has been granted citizenship, he or she may lose citizenship. A person must disclose criminal activity involvements, any names formerly used, and identities before gaining citizenship.
2. REFUSING TO TESTIFY BEFORE CONGRESS
If a person is ordered to testify before the United States congressional committee, he or she may not refuse to testify. In most cases, persons are ordered to do so if he or she is believed to be involved with subversive acts such as those intended to overthrow the United States government or harm a United States government official.
3. PARTICIPATING IN SUBVERSIVE ORGANIZATIONS
If the United States government can prove a person was involved in a subversive organization within five years of gaining citizenship, the person’s citizenship can be revoked. Membership in subversive organizations may be considered a violation of the oath of United States allegiance.
4. BECOMING DISHONORABLY DISCHARGED FROM THE MILITARY
If a person is dishonorably discharged from the military before he or she has served five years, the person’s United States citizenship may be revoked.
